Mixing Old & New: Girl's Nursery Design

A fun song that has really captured the American imagination lately is Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club! I was inspired to put together a nursery design in response to this song after reading an online thread about what little kid's interpret the song to mean; these accounts came from their parents, were diverse depending on the child's age and were just really interesting! Essentially most young kids (3 yrs) really thought the pink pony's were the main character of the story...and those a little older (9 yrs) "kind of got it's true meaning."

See a playful, contemporary, girl's nursery mood board below that I put together this weekend. I really wanted to go "full-on pink" with this one and pulled items from a number of online retailers. Most were really reasonably priced too. (PS - Like what you see? Message me and I can send you the links to shop these items!)

And this wouldn't be a Trader Bec's Design if I didn't "throw in a touch of old with the new." So speaking of that - have you seen Schitt's Creek? There is a hilarious scene (honestly reminds me of my mother and I's dynamic) where the main character is cooking with his mom and the directions say to "fold in some cheese." There is a cute back and forth that makes you giggle.

So essentially what we need to do with the above contemporary design, to make it truly dynamic is to "fold-in" some antique or vintage elements. In this regard, it becomes a true "Trade Bec's Design."

What would I suggest then?

  • Vintage print artwork
  • Vintage cowboy boots in the form of artwork, a vase, etc.
  • Antique jewel box
  • Antique pageant crown

And you could go with items in-keeping with the soft pinks (see suggestions below 1,2,3,5) or lean-in to the bright multi-colors (see suggestions below 4,6,7).

Below are some real life pieces for sale now, that I have curated from www.charish.com, a website known for it's amazing vintage pieces.

SHOP THE VINTAGE PIECES:

Any of these elements would add just the right amount of "folded-in" uniqueness. Add it to the wall, to a shelf display...it doesn't have to be something the child touches or interacts with directly - especially since sometimes antiques, vintage, or older elements can be delicate or made of materials not suitable for the health and well being of our littles...especially if they were to get into their mouths! ;-)

I hope you enjoyed this post! Again, if you like the girl's nursery mood board above - and would like to shop any of those specific items. Please contact me (traderbecs@gmail.com)! I will send you the links to purchase.
