When we found out that we were expecting of course we were delighted! It was a true blessing, especially at my age (shout out to all the "geriatric" Mammas out there).
As a Creative I knew I wanted to have fun with this baby and with his nursery design. I certainly wanted to blend vintage and new for a well-curated space. I started with composing a "generic" mood board of new items (see below).
The room was previously a guest room and needed a light-touch remodel. We added wainscoting (painted white), painted a contrast color above, and replaced the ceiling fan. For the focal wall color, we landed on the perfect option called ironically "baby blue eyes" which was absolutely meant for us.
The overall design of the room began with consideration of the larger items - i.e. the changing table (a vintage piece bought in the West Bottoms of Kansas City at Charmed House, repurposed for the nursery), the rug (a salvaged carpet remnant, gifted to us by family in the business - shout out to Designer's Library), and crib (a special family piece borrowed from my cousin whose two, now grown, children slept in).
I found a vintage, yellow and cream stripped lamp at For Good Weather in KC. The vintage side table was from River Market Antiques. And the pre-loved ottoman was scored from a Vintage Monkey estate sale...on the final day for $10! The ottoman's original, green gingham slipcover fabric added charm to the space.
The unofficial theme of the room became "doggies and dinosaurs." Which I incorporated mostly through artwork. I ordered a print of a famous photograph by an LA-based photographer which features dogs poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and chose a doggie mobile for above the crib.
We incorporated some custom elements too that were close to our hearts. Three of my Aunts contributed handmade pieces - a baby blanket, a quilt, and a needlepoint pillow. I also commissioned a handmade, watercolor, baby announcement.
