The WHY behind Healing Homes & Spaces

The WHY behind Healing Homes & Spaces

Why am I passionate about creating healing homes and spaces?

Like many people I have experienced trauma in my life. There is a statistic that 60% of adults have had a traumatic experience in childhood and 20% have had 3 or more.

These traumatic life events commonly including physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse, incarceration, war, natural disasters, mental illness, and divorce. Whether direct or indirect, findings from the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study reveal that these individuals are often at greater risk for chronic health conditions and health-risk behaviors later in life, including heart and liver diseases, substance abuse, PTSD, and depression.

What this tells us is that there is a lot of unresolved trauma in our world and a real need to address it.

I have done the personal self-development work to analyze the WHY behind my interest in the arts and creativity - and in short, there is opportunity and power there. The power to speak one's truth and to re-create your story and experience. Like most "survivors" (honestly, a word which is hard for me to publicly identify with) I am called to "serve" aka help others. That's why I am not only invested in design services about also blogging; I know I can help people in many ways by being both in physical service (i.e. enacting change in people's physical home) and acting as a guide (through my writing).

One of my favorite Netflix shows (of the last decade) is the reboot of Queer Eye whose tagline is "more than a makeover." For those unfamiliar with the show's premise, a friendly group of five gay gentleman from different professional backgrounds surprise a guest with a complete personal evolution. Each of the stars on the show are experts in their own field - fashion, food, lifestyle, self-care and of course interior design.

Whether "real or not," I genuinely appreciate how the show leans into our collective need for life transformations. And like many of you who are fans of the show - I have wondered if some service like this could or should exist in everyday life. (But seriously wouldn't that be cool?!)

So in 2025 Trader Bec's will be headed in a like minded direction - i.e. one of outwardly speaking to the transformative nature of small changes. With a little tweak here and there, guided by an expert you too can achieve results that will leave your life forever better. In future blog posts, I will be walking you through more ways to proactively make changes.
